--Some considerations that apply to designing a
good self-steering device.
My Boats
For a little about me take a look at
the "My Boats" page which is really not
much
about self-steering---just a place to
put my things
Model 2004--Evolution

The vane that started it all mounted on my boat.
The construction is
very different from this basic design
but the geometry
is the same and both do a good job
steering my
boat.
These drawings and this web site are the result of my
experience building several different "Wind Machines" as
my wife calls them. I am retired and have a lifetime of experimental engineering
to draw on. What started as a solution to self-steering on my small boat
grew into a hobby. Bad health has put a stop to my needing much in the way of
such devices so now I enjoy helping others by providing drawings and help with
building them. I have used ideas from other
builders and if I have not given each credit it is an unintended error on my
part.
I feel as one builder put it --" ' the value of your site is to encourage
people to
design and build their own vanes' " . I hope it is helping.
The drawings were made using AutoCad Lt 2000
and the JEPG images were made from scanned letter size prints. The
compression is such that some detail may be hard to see. They show well on
my 17 inch monitor. If you have trouble viewing them please contact me for
larger file sizes that I can send via E-mail

I would also appreciate any
comments you might have relating to
to this site or the designs. This effort is pure
hobby for me and
is non-profit. My only compensation is the
satisfaction of sharing
my efforts with others and introducing the joys
of having a good
self-steering system onboard.
