"Black River Boats"

Electric Boat Homepage

Black River Boats has been building environmentally sound wooden Electric Boats for over twenty years. We gather, saw and season woods from local dead fall Atlantic White Cedar, oak, Black Walnut and other trees of misfortune. No rain forest woods or living trees are felled for use in any of our boats. White Cedar by is very nature is slow to decay and is the wood of choice for east coast boat builders. Dead fall trees are as good as felled living trees. These isolated stand of Atlantic White Cedar are becoming rare as changes in the environment slowly take its toll. Leaving standing health trees provides a chance for natural replacement.

Our shop is located on the headwaters of the Black River in North Carolina, where our boats have proven their reliability and efficiency for many years of clean and quiet operation. Black River Boats offers beautiful as well as functional boats. Our power system are the best and most efficient available. Black River Boats are easy and inexpensive to operate. They can handle shallow rivers, streams and swamps where conditions are less than ideal. By the very nature of their wood, they are at home in the wild.

Take a Look!

Electric Boats are not a new idea at all. They have been around for a hundred years or so. The first outboard motor was electric. The electric motor was in operation before there was a generator to produce electricity, all power came from batteries. So what has happened in the past hundred years or so? Electric boats and cars for that matter, still use about the same motor and are still powered by about the same batteries. But things are starting to change, mostly with the acceptance that this tried and true method works and works very well. The advantage of Electric Boats is in their precise control and quiet operation. Their efficient hulls and low speeds produce little wake. They are clean in that they produce no pollutants. They are reliable, need no tune ups and start at the flip of a switch. They are economical to operate, a small Electric Boat can run all day for a quarter. They can be recharged from the sun using photovoltaics anywhere the sun shines. They can do all this and more with only a whisper.
